James Ennis from Long Beach State has won StatSheet's Big West Player of the Week for February 18th. Alex Young from UC Irvine has won StatSheet's Big West Freshman of the Week. Ennis put up 60% shooting, 19 points per game, and 9 rebounds per game. The Long Beach State senior played well in wins against Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside.
Ennis led scoring and rebounding for the 49ers with 26 points and 15 rebounds in a big 85-65 win over Cal State Fullerton. In the next game he added 12 points and 4 assists in a huge 75-35 victory over UC Riverside.
This is one of three StatSheet Big West Player of the Week honors for James Ennis. He has also received an honorable mention. The runner-up this week is sophomore Alan Williams from UC-Santa Barbara. Honorable mention goes to Long Beach State junior Tony Freeland. Stephan Hicks finished 14th and was the highest ranking player from Cal State Northridge.
StatSheet Big West Freshman of the Week: UC Irvine's Alex Young
Alex Young played an average of 29 minutes starting both games for UC Irvine. He led all Big West freshmen in both scoring (13.0 pts per game) and assists (5.5 per game). In a late 52-48 win over UC Riverside, Young contributed 10 points and 8 rebounds. Following that in a massive 86-66 win against Cal State Fullerton, he added 7 assists and 66% shooting.
Amazingly, Alex Young has won the StatSheet Big West Freshman of the Week 3 times. Joel Awich from Cal Poly gets runner-up. Zach Gordon from Cal Poly takes honorable mention. The highest ranking freshman from Cal State Northridge was Brandon Perry who finished 10th. Cal State Northridge has yet to win StatSheet Big West Player of the Week.
